British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
