Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
