In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
