Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
